Isaac and Rebekah: Rearing Rivals

Lesson 3

July 21, 2007

Key Thought: Isaac and Rebekah made some wrong choices in their idyllic marriage that caused painful consequences for the whole family.

1.      Have a volunteer read Genesis 24:42-48.

A.     Ask class members to share a short thought on what the main idea of this text is.

B.     Why did Abraham not want his son to marry someone from where they lived? Why was the servant so successful?

C.     Personal Application : Have you ever asked the Lord for a sign in making a decision? Share an experience and the results.

D.     Case Study:  One of your relatives states, “I don’t think God chooses anyone for us. He gives us the choice to choose our own spouse. If we make a good choice, the Lord can bless. If we don’t, we have to live with our decision and make the best of it. Otherwise, we might think the Lord chose someone for us other than our spouse. That would lead to adultery and self-justification. ” How would you respond to your relative?

   2.   Have a volunteer read Genesis 25:19-24.

               A. Ask class members to share a short thought on what the main idea of this text        is.

B.     Why do you think there was strife between the brothers? Did the parents contribute to that strife in any way?

C.     Personal Application : Do you tend to favor one child over another in any ways? Are some children harder to teach and more disinterested in spiritual matters than the others?

D.     Case Study :  One of your friends states, “We don’t need our kids to be “churched” as much as we need to be close to God. We can do that in nature and not necessarily in the building where the self-proclaimed saints meet every week.”  How would you respond to your friend?

3.      Have a volunteer read Genesis 27:6-13.

A.     Ask class members to share a short thought on what the main idea of this text is.

B.     Why didn’t Jacob want to go along with his mother’s plan? Did any curse come upon Jacob’s mother because of this deception?

C.     Personal Application :  Have you ever been deceitful for the “right” reasons? Is deception ever necessary as long as it is useful in fulfilling God’s plans?

D.     Case Study:  One of your neighbors states, “I don’t know what’s wrong with this deception. Esau had already despised and given up his birthright. If Jacob hadn’t gone along with his mother’s plan; Esau would have gotten the birthright and the blessings, contrary to God’s predictions.”  How would you respond to your neighbor?

4.      Have a volunteer read Genesis 27:46, Genesis 28:1-5.

A.     Ask class members to share a short thought on what the main idea of this text is.

B.     Why was Jacob’s mother “weary” of the women in her area, and why didn’t she want Jacob marrying one of them?

C.     Personal Application :  How weary are you of the people in the town where you live? Why would you want your children to marry someone strong in your faith and beliefs?  Share your thoughts.

D.     Think of someone who needs to hear a message from this week’s lesson. Tell that class what you plan to do this week to share with them.

(Note: “Truth that is not imparted, that is not lived, loses its life-giving power, its healing virtue. Its blessings can be retained only as it is shared.” MH p. 149)
