Metaphors of Salvation

Lesson 9

November 29, 2008
KEY THOUGHT: The Bible employs different images to help us group
Christ’s death. No one image or idea is grand enough to capture the full
meaning of Christ’s death.
1. Have a volunteer read Romans 3:25.
A. Ask class members to share a short thought on the main idea of this text.
B. What does propitiation mean?
C. Personal Application: How do you feel about the good news that Jesus’ righteousness is used to the remission of our sins?
D. Case Study: One of your relatives states, “Why does this say this is for sins that are past? Doesn’t Christ’s blood cover our future sins?” How would you respond to your relative?
2. Have a volunteer read Mark 10:45.
A. Ask class members to share a short thought on what the main idea of this text is.
B. In what ways did Jesus come and minister to others?
C. Personal Application How did Christ’s coming to the earth minister to you?
D. Case Study: One of your friends states, “Why did it say Christ gave His life as a ransom? How can His death be compared to paying a ransom like in a kidnapping?” How would you respond to your friend?
3. Have a volunteer read 2 Corinthians 5:18-21.
A. Ask class members to share a short thought on what the main idea of this text is.
B. How does Christ’s death on the cross give us the ministry of reconciliation?
C. Personal Application How do you fit in as an ambassador for Christ? What activities have you done lately to be a minister of reconciliation to others?
D. Case Study: One of your neighbors states, “Works don’t mean much unless the person speaking can be trusted and practices what he preaches. It’s hard to speak truth when you’re not living it.” How would you respond to your neighbor?
4. Have a volunteer read Romans 3:25,26.
A. As class members to share a short thought on what the main idea of this text is.
B. What does justice have to do with Christ’s remission of sins?
C. Personal Application: How does Christ justify you? Is there any way you can justify yourself?
D. Case Study : Think of someone you know that needs to hear a message from this week’s lessons. Tell the class what you plan to do this week to share with them.
(Note : “Truth that is not imparted, that is not lived, loses its life-giving power, its healing virtue. Its blessings can be retained only as it is shared.” MH p. 149)
