Spiritual Gifts and Prophecy

Lesson 3

January 17, 2009

Key Thought :  The Holy Spirit empowers the church by giving spiritual gifts. One of these is the gift of prophecy.

1.       Have a volunteer read Ephesians 4:11.

A.      Ask class members to share a short thought on what the main idea of this text is.

B.     How does the gift of prophecy help perfect the saints?

C.      Personal Application :  Why don’t we see the gift of prophecy in the church today?  Did prophecy die in the 1800’s because it was no longer needed?.

D.     Case Study :  One of your relatives states, “Prophecy was necessary for the early church for a sign that God was with them, but we don’t have that sign gift anymore, just like tongue-speaking is no longer necessary.” How would you respond to your relative?

2.        Have a volunteer read I Corinthians 1:6,7.

A.      Ask class members to share a short thought on what the main idea of this text is.

B.     How was the gift of prophecy confirmed in the early church?

C.      Personal Application :  How can we be sure that the spiritual gifts have been confirmed in our church?

D.     Case Study :  One of your friends states, “Why should we believe what a woman said would happen over a hundred years ago? Why doesn’t God raise up a modern prophet for today?” How would you respond to your friend?

3.         Have a volunteer read Revelation 16:13,14.

A.      Ask class members to share a short thought on what the main idea of this text is.

B    We haven’t seen many miracles from any source lately, but this says there will be devils working miracles. Will this be in the name of false religion or secular in nature?

C.      Personal Application :  How can we keep ourselves from being deceived by these false miracles?

D.     Case Study :  One of your neighbors asks, “Have you been filled with the spirit? Have you ever spoken in tongues? God is bringing about a great revival and the gifts of the spirit are being poured out upon His people.” How would you respond to your neighbor?

4.           Have a volunteer read I Corinthians 14:1-5.

A.      Ask class members to share a short thought on what the main idea of this text is.

B     Why does Paul consider prophecy as one of the best gifts?  Why is he contrasting prophecy with tongue-speaking here?

C.      Personal Application :  How well do you understand the prophetic messages of Daniel and Revelation, and how well can you communicate this information to others?

D.     Case Study :  Think of one person who needs to hear a message from this week’s lesson. Tell the class what you plan to do this week to share with them.

(Note: “Truth that is not lived, that is not imparted, loses its life-giving power, its healing virtue. Its blessings can be retained only as it is shared.”  MH p. 149)
